Chapter 289: 290: Meng Xi's Arrangements
Chapter 289: Chapter 290: Meng Xi’s Arrangements
After finally getting rid of two department head followers, Chen Cang managed to break free and arrived at Dongda First Hospital before five o’clock.
When he reached the Department of Cardiac Surgery, he found everyone busily at work.
His own mentor, Director Meng, wasn’t in the office, but… Doctor Ge Huai, who had once competed with him in suturing, was there!
Chen Cang hurried over, “Doctor Ge, hello.”
Ge Huai turned around, looking at Chen Cang with a slight startle. It had been over a month, and to be honest, Ge Huai didn’t quite remember Chen Cang.
After all, it was only a brief encounter, “You are…?”
Chen Cang looked at Ge Huai and smiled, “Doctor Ge, I am a student of Director Meng.”
Ge Huai suddenly realized, and his expression was somewhat exaggerated, “Oh! You’re that… what’s his name!”
Chen Cang sighed. If only that over-the-top acting had some sincerity, it would have been perfect.
It seemed that the lesson from his last failure wasn’t harsh enough. Thinking this, Chen Cang made up his mind not to go easy next time.
Others take a loss to heart. Just look at Xiao Yan, “Thirty years in the east and thirty years in the west, don’t take advantage of the young and poor,” how well said!
But you, you’ve forgotten it already.
Chen Cang quickly smiled again, “Right, right, right! I am that what’s-his-name. Um… Doctor Ge, isn’t Director Meng around?”
Ge Huai turned to look at Chen Cang, “Hmm, she’s in the operating room. You can wait for her here, or you could go to the OR to find her.”
After thinking it over, Chen Cang decided to wait in the office.
After all, the operating room wasn’t a place one could just enter at will. If it weren’t for Tan Zhonglin often coming to the Provincial Second Hospital to perform surgeries, he wouldn’t have such nerve.
And as far as Dongda First Hospital was concerned, Chen Cang was nobody… naturally, they wouldn’t let irrelevant people in.
With nothing better to do, he picked up a book and started reading. After waiting for less than an hour, around six o’clock, Meng Xi came back.
Chen Cang quickly stood up, “Hello, Director Meng!”
Meng Xi looked at Chen Cang, took off her mask, nodded, and after sitting down, she crossed her long legs in a comfortable position.
Three consecutive surgeries that afternoon had indeed been tiring.
“Have a seat.”
Chen Cang nodded and said thank you.
By this time, it was almost the end of the workday, and there weren’t many people around.
Just after sitting down, feeling that it was a bit hot, Meng Xi reached to unbutton her white coat. It was snug and quite stuffy.
Meng Xi asked, “Did you finish your class?”
Although Chen Cang didn’t attend, according to the schedule, he supposedly had class. Without blushing or skipping a beat, he told the truth, “Yes, after the National Day holiday, I started my official mentorship.”
Meng Xi uttered, “Oh. The head of the graduate department told me about you, saying that… you are already working in the emergency department at the Provincial Second Hospital, right?”
Chen Cang gave an awkward smile. As a graduate student, he really was somewhat negligent. Other people followed their teachers to wherever they should go for their residency training; Chen Cang had to work, so he could only opt for this compromise.
“Yes, but Director Meng, I will try to come here as often as I can.”
Meng Xi seemed contemplative, falling silent for a few minutes before looking at Chen Cang and saying, “I’ll give you two options.”
“The first is you don’t have to come here, just keep working as you are, and having my name associated with you is enough. I won’t interfere with what you do. After all, you’re… in a special situation, already having started working and being older. I have no demands of you, just graduate without causing me any trouble.”
Chen Cang was taken aback. Realizing suddenly that he could not afford to be so cavalier about his future livelihood, of course, he couldn’t treat it so lightly.
Thinking of this, Chen Cang quickly shook his head, “Teacher Meng, I sincerely want to learn from you. I am very interested in cardiothoracic surgery and I also hope to really learn something by following you. It’s not just about getting a diploma and degree.”
Meng Xi smiled faintly, seemed thoughtful, and nodded, “Then it may be a bit tougher for you.”
After a short pause, he suddenly said, “In that case, come to me after work every day for surgery, and we’ll make special arrangements when necessary.”
Meng Xi said, “There are many surgeries at the First Hospital of Dongda; leaving on time is basically impossible. You should come every day to learn from me, and try to get hands-on as soon as possible.”
After listening, Chen Cang nodded, “Okay, thank you for your trouble, Teacher Meng.”
Chen Cang could sense the meaning in Meng Xi’s words, and he felt somewhat emotional.
Meng Xi truly embodied the saying: “Though he could have lived off his looks, he insisted on studying medicine.”
At the very least, this saying indicated that Meng Xi was indeed a good person.
His nightlife was spent entirely in the operating room.
In fact, when you think about it, it’s quite heartbreaking.
After work, the work continues—it’s less like finishing work and more like a halftime break.
When Ge Huai saw Meng Xi returning, he hurriedly approached, “Director Meng, you’re back. Emergency has sent over a patient with acute chest pain.”
Meng Xi got up quickly, “Where is the patient now? Has the ECG been done? What’s the diagnosis from emergency?”
Meng Xi’s rapid-fire questions made Chen Cang inadvertently take notice!
These were things that should have been prepared in advance by the emergency department.
Ge Huai quickly said, “The ECG has been done, but there’s no typical ST segment elevation. Cardiac biomarkers were also tested, and troponin levels were abnormally high. The patient has typical symptoms of myocardial ischemia. We’re considering the possibility of non-ST segment elevation acute coronary syndrome.”
Meng Xi said, “Let’s go, take me to see.”
Ge Huai hurried out, and as Meng Xi walked, he buttoned up his coat muttering to himself that the white coat was too small. He would ask the head nurse to get him a larger size tomorrow!
“Chen Cang, come with me,” Meng Xi suddenly remembered Chen Cang and looked back to say it.
By that time, Chen Cang was already following behind.
Meng Xi couldn’t help but nod his head without saying a word.
Upon arriving at the ward, they found the patient lying on the bed with an ECG machine neatly placed there.
Without a word, Meng Xi picked up the recent ECG for another look and then slightly frowned.
He was puzzled!
The patient was a young man dressed in typical sales attire, now grimacing and clutching his chest.
It seemed his colleague was beside him.
Meng Xi asked the patient, looking down, “How are you feeling unwell?”
The man grimaced in pain, “It feels like my chest is burning, coming and going in waves! Even breathing is a bit difficult.”
“It shoots to the front and back of my chest, and my shoulders are also uncomfortable.”
Meng Xi nodded, “How long has it been? What triggered it?”
The man replied, “It started at noon today, after drinking a bit too much with a client at lunch. I went back and slept a bit, and when I woke up, I felt unwell. I hurried to a small clinic downstairs, where they gave me a few nitroglycerin tablets. It eased after I took one, so I didn’t think much of it. But… an hour ago, it started again, taking another didn’t help, and the tightness got even worse. That’s when I took a taxi to the emergency room.”
“Now, it doesn’t feel as severe!”
Directly addressing Chen Cang, “Chen Cang, you can do an ECG, right? Do another one!”
