Chapter 99 - 0097: Setting Off Again
Chapter 99: Chapter 0097: Setting Off Again
“Hello!”
“Hello!”
“Is this Director Zhu? This is Tian Yuan!”
“Yes, Director Tian, hello!”
“I happened to run into you on the road, but didn’t have the chance to chat much. How are things going lately?”
“Thank you for asking. I’m doing very well. You have already arrived at the designated hospital, haven’t you?”
“Not yet, a major traffic accident occurred on Shipo Road. We are providing assistance in the rescue mission at Shipo People’s Hospital. I hope you didn’t get caught up in any traffic.”
“Oh, we’ve already reached Daxiang Mountain. The traffic accident must have happened behind us. We didn’t get stuck in traffic.”
“Good, that’s a relief, perhaps we could get together when we return to the city?”
“Sure, let’s keep in touch.”
After hanging up the phone, Director Tian breathed a sigh of relief. It wasn’t Director Zhu.
Overthinking again. I’ve been too sensitive. How could the world be so coincidental? How could Director Zhu possibly be an RH-negative type A blood, just like that?
Tian Yuan felt a sense of guilt. Director Zhu had started a new life, but she was still connecting him with Wang Ge in her mind. Even though it was just speculation, she couldn’t help but feel guilty.
As for Director Zhu, the best thing she could do was not to disrupt his life and let him start his own new chapter.
A faint twinge of pain arose in Tian Yuan’s heart, as the image of the scholarly figure who discussed big ideas and wrote fervently with her during their study abroad period began to blur.
Now that she’s here, even if it’s not Director Zhu, she should go greet the blood donors as the chief surgeon.
While she was on the phone earlier, the nurse had stayed put. Tian Yuan continued walking towards ward No.3, with the nurse leading the way.
When they reached the door, the nurse peered through the small window, “Huh, where did he go? Maybe he’s in the restroom. He was here just over ten minutes ago.”
The nurse pushed door open, Director Tian followed her in, only to see the bed neatly made.
The nurse knocked on the bathroom door a few times, “Sir, are you in there?”
After repeating herself a few times and receiving no response, the nurse opened the bathroom door to find it empty.
“He was just receiving an IV transfusion here about ten minutes ago, where did he go?” The nurse was perplexed and muttered to herself.
She inspected the remaining IV bag hanging on the bedside stand.
“Do you know his name?” asked Director Tian.
“He said he didn’t want to leave his name, nor did he want the reward money from the County. We didn’t ask much more at the time, as it was an emergency. As long as the blood type was correct, and he didn’t have any contagious diseases, there were no issues with trans-cross blood transfusion.” The nurse gathered the unfinished saline bag.
Director Tian wanted to ask about his appearance, but decided not to. Such a coincidence couldn’t be possible. Director Zhu had already stated that his car had left before the accident and had reached Daxiang Mountain.
Tian Yuan’s phone rang.
“Director Tian, Director Miao in the operating room is looking for you. She wants you to come to the operating room as soon as possible.” The call was from Song Zimo.
Song Zimo hadn’t gone to relax as expected, he had been watching the surgery the whole time.
Tian Yuan hung up the phone, bid the nurse goodbye, and hurried out of the emergency observation room.
Back in the operating room, Director Miao had already finished the pelvic surgery. However, even after applying the external fixation, the patient’s blood pressure still wasn’t stable. She called for Tian Yuan to consult on the next steps.
“Let the Intervention Department come to do an angiography. If the main trunk isn’t ruptured, some unimportant branches can easily be embolized, and as long as the main trunk isn’t severed, once the pelvic ring is stable and enough blood is transfused, the blood pressure can be stabilized. If the main trunk is severed, the angiography can still confirm the location. Then, we can perform an open abdominal procedure, block the abdominal aorta and anastomose the main blood vessel.” Director Tian gave her opinion.
“What do you think?” Director Tian asked Yang Ping.
Yang Ping said, “Yes, that’s the best plan available.”
The intervention department was summoned for an emergency angiography. The results showed that both the internal and external iliac arteries were intact. The department performed selective embolization on some blood vessels.
After a few more bags of blood were transfused, the patient’s blood pressure finally stabilized.
The operation on Chen Xiaoqiao was nearing its end. After the intestines and uterus were repaired, they were put back into the abdominal cavity. The muscles at the base of the pelvis were being repaired, and the skin was being sutured.
The thoracic surgery was still in progress. A lobe of the lung had been removed, sixteen ribs were broken and were fixed with memory alloy rib clamps. There was no recurrence of cardiac arrest. There were several fractures in the limbs for which the orthopedics department helped. The upper limb fracture was casted, and the lower limb fracture had undergone skeletal traction treatment.
Out of eight victims, only one had died despite the rescue; the rest were successfully rescued, at least temporarily.
All the patients who completed the surgery were sent to the ICU, and the hospital transferred elite surgical staff and ICU doctors to participate in shifts.
After President Dong finished his report, County Chief Wu’s tense face finally relaxed. The ashtray was full of cigarette buds, he was satisfied with these results, this crisis had been tentatively warded off for now.
The directors present wiped their sweat, some unbuttoned their top shirt buttons, and some waited to take a sip of the tea they hadn’t drunk yet.
The tension was too high, exhausting!
“This rescue operation was a collective and proactive effort from everyone. It appears to have been a success, but there were also many problems. Everyone should reflect earnestly afterward. This rescue operation was a substantial and surprise test–” County Chief Wu concluded on the spot.
“For the deceased due to the accident, we need to handle the aftermath well. For the rescued ones, don’t slacken in follow-up treatment. The comrade who donated blood should be rewarded with 10,000 yuan. Also, we should appreciate the medical team from the provincial capital for their great help. We should thank them in person later and send a letter of appreciation to the medical team’s unit–”
County Chief Wu also issued brief instructions for the next steps.
He checked the watch, stood up, and said to President Dong: “Let’s go and wait at the entrance of the operating room to thank the provincial capital medical team and all frontline workers.”
County Chief Wu waited with several directors at the entrance of the operating room. As every victim was wheeled out, they personally asked about their condition and thanked the medical staff.
After the surgery, Director Miao, with all the doctors from Sanbo Hospital, went to the hospital meeting room to rest.
County Chief Wu and President Dong gave simple words of thanks.
Checking the time, it was already past three in the afternoon, they hadn’t eaten yet.
President Dong handled things very carefully and didn’t arrange a feast to avoid any misunderstandings as this was a major traffic accident after all.
He ordered the canteen to prepare boxed meals, which were delivered to the operating room, emergency department, and meeting room. Even County Chief Wu ate a boxed meal.
After dinner, Director Tian, Yang Ping, and Director Chen Xiaoqiao went to the ICU with Director Miao to check on the postoperative patients. Yang Ping personally checked the urine output, which was already more than 800 ml; the shock was corrected.
There wasn’t much blood in the drainage bag, only a few milliliters. Yang Ping checked the patency of the drainage tube; it was very smooth.
The monitor showed a blood pressure of 102/67mmHg, already within the normal range. Maintaining normalcy indicated that there was no internal bleeding, and the bleeding had been stopped very thoroughly.
Various indicators from the blood drawn in the ICU also showed signs of improvement. The hemoglobin was maintained above 65g/L; the blood sugar was also within a normal range, without any signs of hyperglycemia after pancreatic injury. This indicated that the pancreatic function should still be normal.
After the gastrointestinal repair, they needed to be on intravenous nutrition for a while, which is something ICU doctors were very proficient at.
After seeing the patients, Director Tian said goodbye to President Dong and Director Miao, expressing that if needed, they could contact him anytime.
President Dong and Director Miao thanked them repeatedly. Originally, Director Miao was supposed to accompany the Sanbo medical team to Nanqiao County, but something huge happened at home, so he didn’t have time to go.
The sun was about to set, signaling the time to leave Shipo.
“Get in the car!”
The bus was parked in the parking lot of the emergency entrance. Zhang Lin shouted loudly while Little Five took the roll call.
Almost everyone had participated in the rescue. Except for the doctors who were in the operating room, everyone had participated more or less in the emergency department handling victims and transferring them.
The female colleagues from obstetrics and gynecology were still wearing high heels. Walking was difficult for them; they were limping, had foot injuries, and painful expressions on their faces.
Liang Fatty opened the luggage compartment: “Change your shoes. Which suitcase is yours? I’ll help you get it out.”
County Chief Wu, President Dong, and Director Miao saw everyone off, shaking hands over and over again.
A red banner was quickly made and hung at the entrance of the emergency department:
“The people of Shipo thank you!”
Counting heads.
“Everyone is here!”
“Let’s go!”
