Chapter 42: New World V

Chapter 42: New World V

Gazef Stronoff, the Warrior Captain of the Re-Estize Kingdom, was on a journey, riding a horse at the head of a group of 50 men.

He had been instructed by the King to kill the bandits terrorizing the villages at the kingdom's borders.

They had been traveling for a while and came across some destroyed villages. All the villagers in them were killed mercilessly by the bandits.

Now, they were approaching the last village called the Carne Village.

Gazef: I hope the bandits have not destroyed the last village.

It took them 10 minutes to reach the entrance of the village. A fat old man, a young man with a peculiar mask, and a lady clad in dark armor stood there.

Gazef: Who are those?

He thought in apprehension. Those might have been the enemy he was looking for. He kept inspecting them from a distance, but seeing them not moving from their location made him slightly less worried about them.

Once near them, he spoke in a booming voice with apparent confidence in his eyes.

Gazef: I am the Warrior-Captain of the Re-Estize Kingdom, Gazef Stronoff. By order of the King, I have been visiting each frontier village to exterminate knights from enemy countries who have been making trouble here.

He then turned toward the chief of the village.

Gazef: You must be the Chief of this village. Can you tell me who is the person beside you? He looks peculiar.

Before the chief could answer, Momonga cut him off and spoke regally.

Momonga: Pleased to meet you, Warrior-Captain of the Kingdom. My name is Ramses, and I am a magic caster. This village was attacked by knights, and so I stepped in to rescue them.

This surprised Gazef, but he immediately composed himself, dismounted his horse, and bowed once he was on the ground.

Gazef: Thank you for saving this village, master Ramses.

Momonga: Please raise your head. In truth, I did this for payment, so no thanks are needed.

Gazef stopped bowing and looked toward Momonga.

Gazef: A payment, huh. Does that mean you are an adventurer?

Momonga: Not really; I was traveling and just happened to pass by. I am nobody famous.

Gazef: Travelling, I see. Then how about that mask?

Momonga: I wear it for reasons known only to a magic caster.

Gazef: I understand.

Then he turned his gaze toward Albedo, but she didn't speak a word.

Momonga: She is my partner, Albedo.

Gazef: I see. I regret to waste more of your time, but could you please tell me about the people who attacked this village.

Momonga: With Pleasure.

We moved toward the village chief's house; I told Gazef everything that transpired there.

Gazef: I see.

Then, a soldier entered the chief's home.

Soldier: Captain Gazef, people wearing peculiar attires have surrounded the village.

Gazef: Is that so?

The soldier nodded. Gazef and I moved toward the window facing the village's outskirts. There, a few people wearing strange clothes were standing. Next to them, arch-angel flames, a type of low-level angel from Yggdrasil, floated in the air.

Momonga: Who are these people? What do they want? I don't think there should be anything that valuable in this village.

Momonga lied; he knew who these people were. They were a part of Sunlight Scripture. It was one of the Six Scriptures of the Slane Theocracy. They were led by Nigun Grid Luin and specialized in the extermination of demi-human villages.

Gazef: Master Remses, you do not know either? Well, if it is not wealth they seek, there can only be one other answer.

Momonga: It seems you are quite despised, master Gazef.

I spoke while locking my eyes with Gazef.

Gazef: It seems that way. However, this is troubling.

Gazef spoke while out the window. It is important to note that, in Yggdrasil, arch-angel flames were low-level summons. Still, they were quite formidable opponents in the new world, even for a man of Gazef's caliber.

He could defeat a few of them with no problem, but the problem was that the scripture members could summon them again, meaning he had to fight a nearly endless amount of them.

Gazef: Judging by their equipment and the number of angels present, it's reasonable to conclude that they belong to an elite unit from the Theocracy.

Momonga: I agree with your assumption.

Then Gazef moved away from the window, bowed toward Momonga, and spoke.

Gazef: Master Remses, would you let me hire you if it is all right with you? You may name your price, and I will ensure it's met.

Momonga didn't answer for a little bit. During this, Albedo, standing a distance away from them, placed two fingers on the right side of her head.

Momonga: Please allow me to dec---.

Albedo: Pardon the intrusion.

Before Momonga could finish his sentence, Albedo interrupted and moved near them.

Albedo: Ramses, our Master wants you to help the Chief Warrior. It is your final test. I will only intervene if you are unable to prevail.

Hearing this, Momonga became silent for a few seconds before turning toward Gazed and extending his right hand.

Momonga: I will be happy to assist you, master Gazef.

Gazef: Before I accept your help, might I ask who this Master is, your partner is referring to.

Momonga: I'd appreciate it if you didn't delve too deeply into it. Even if I wished to divulge information about my Master, I am not authorized to do so by my Master. Please try to understand.

Gazef kept observing Momonga and Albedo for a few more seconds before shaking Momonga's hand.

Gazef: I understand. But I wish I could meet them someday.

Momonga: Maybe, someday.

They ceased the handshake, and Albedo moved toward the door and opened it. Before exiting the room, she turned toward Gazef and Momonga and spoke.

Albedo: I'll observe the fight from the sky and intervene if things go south.

Saying this, she exited the house. Momonga took a deep breath to calm himself and then turned toward Gazef.

Momonga: Let's discuss our strategy. I don't want to be disrespectful, but your men don't look strong. I suggest we leave them here for the villagers' protection and confront the enemies alone.

Gazef: I agree. Please wait here while I talk with them.

Saying this, Gazef exited the room.

~Scene Change~

Nigun, the leader of the Sunlight Scripture, stood in an opening. Principality Observation, a mid-level angel from Yggdrasil floated beside him in the air.

Nigun: There he is.

He spoke in a low tone.

Nigus was happy seeing the warrior-captain of the Re-Estize walking toward his men.

Nigun: Who is that beside him?

He thought while looking at the other man walking beside Gazef.

Nigun: It doesn't really matter.

Gazef and Momonga kept walking toward the Sunlight Scripture.

Nigun: So, we finally meet Gazef Stronoff.

Gazef remained silent in response and kept walking toward him. Once they were only a few meters from the first set of angels, they stopped.

Nigun: Before we start the fight, might I ask where your soldiers are, Gazef Stronoff. Did they run away at the sight of the angels?

Gazef: I don't need them to defeat a low life like you, who massacres innocent villagers.

Gazef spoke while taking a stance. Nigun, on the other hand, laughed.

Nigun: Is that so. They don't really matter as long as we kill you. And you...

He pointed his finger toward Momonga and spoke.

Nigun: Who the hell are you?

Momonga remained silent and unsheathed the great swords from his back.

Momonga: I have no obligation to answer your question.

Momonga's reply angered Nigun.

Nigun: "You! Have the angels attack them, magic casters focus your attacks on the chief warrior."

As he finished his commands, the summoners commanded the angels to attack them while the magic casters prepared their spells.

Momonga: Good luck, master Gazef.

Saying this, I lunged toward the approaching angels and activated one of my spells.

Momonga: *Necrotic Shield*

It was an 8th-tier spell; it created a purple shield around the user, able to withstand both physical and magical attacks. It was more effective against the beings of light.

A purple translucent shield formed around me while a few angels attacked me with their light swords. But, their swords failed to go through the shield.

Leveraging this moment, I spun around and attacked the angels. Because of the massive level difference, my great swords passed through them, killing them.

Without wasting any time, I lunged toward one of the summoners; reaching near him, I swung my sword, separating his head from the body.

All this happened in just a second.

Nigun: What just happened?

Not only Nigun but everyone was surprised. Nigun was the first one to recover from the shock.

Nigun: Don't just stand there; summon the next set of angels and attack him.

The remaining summoners began summoning new angels while the remaining angels attacked me.

Without wasting time, I used another spell.

Momonga: *Necrotic Dom*

It was a 10th-tier spell that created a dom around me. If any low or mid-level being entered it, they would immediately die. The size of the dom was controlled by the provided MP.

A translucent purple dom formed around me. And as soon as the angels entered it, they all died.

Nigun: He is dangerous.

Nigun thought while looking at Momonga killing angels and summoners with ease. On the other hand, Gazef was struggling against the constant barrage of spells.

Nigun: At this rate, we might lose. I first need to kill that man. Principality Observation, attack that man.

The Principality Observation moved toward Momonga and raised its staff to attack him. Because the spells Necrotic Dom and Necrotic Shield had already worn off, its attack was able to hit Momonga.

Momonga raised his great swords to defend himself against the staff.

The staff struck the swords but could not pass through them.

Momonga: Such pitiful attacks.

Momonga jumped back and aimed one of his swords toward the angel.

Momonga: "*Piercing Necrotic Beam*"

It was another 10th-tier spell that fired a purple beam toward the target. It was especially potent against the beings of light and could kill anyone below level 60.

The beam pierced the angel, and it disappeared into motes of light.

Nigun: That was one hit. That's impossible; there's no way a high-level angel could be destroyed by one spell.

Seeing one of their highest-level angels getting killed by one spell shook the members of the scripture.

???: Captain Nigun, what are we going to do now?

Nigun smiled, took a sealing crystal, and raised it toward the sky.

Nigun: We'll summon the highest-level angel!

Momonga: As if I let you do that.

I lunged toward him, buffing myself up with Necrotic energy. Once near him, I swung my sword and separated his head from his body.

Seeing their captain die, the rest of the members lost their morale and began fleeing the scene.

Gazef: Where do you think you're going!

Gazef didn't give them a chance to escape.

It took us a minute to kill all the members of the scripture. I walked toward the corpse of Nigun and picked up the sealing crystal.

Gazef: What is that?

Momonga: It's a sealing crystal that can store spells.

Gazef: I see; that was some great fighting. I didn't expect you to be good with magic and sword.

Momonga: It's all due to my Master. I am who I am due to him.

I put the crystal inside my bag and turned toward Gazef.

Momonga: Well, Master Gazef, I'm afraid we must part ways here. If fate wills it, may we meet again?

I extended my right hand.

Gazef: Certainly. I would also like to invite you and your Master to the capital of Re-Esize. So, if you are near that area, please come and meet me. I am sure my King will want to reward you, Master Ramses.

Gazef shook my hand. I nodded, and as I was about to turn, I heard a demonic roar from the nearby forest.

"ROOOOOWR!"
