Chapter 80 Start of a War
The sound of galloping hooves echoed as three horses raced toward a small city.
Though it had protective walls, this wasn't an ordinary village—it was one of the key cities under Avalon's rule, famous for its gold mines. The villagers here were all miners, well-paid for their work, but the city was on the edge of the kingdom, where beast attacks were common.
"They're coming! Sound the alarm!" the woman on the lead horse shouted as she and her companions approached the city gates.
A loud horn blared, and the townspeople hurried to the designated safehouse. The gates were opened just long enough for the riders to pass through before they slammed shut behind them.
The woman dismounted quickly and ran up the stairs to the city wall, where the commander of the troops awaited her. Bowing her head in respect, she delivered her report.
"They're coming in huge numbers—orc, goblin, kobold. I even think I saw a demon wolf," she said, her voice tight with urgency.
"A demon wolf?" the commander asked, frowning. "Could this be an attack from the demon kingdom?"
"I didn't see anyone leading them, but it was chaotic. We barely avoided being spotted. They're coming straight for us, and I don't think we can hold them off before reinforcements arrive."
"The communication crystals aren't working, we have no reinforcement coming" the commander replied grimly.
"All of them?" the scout asked, startled.
"Yes, we're cut off. We'll have to fight if they reach us. There's no time to evacuate everyone. I've already sent someone to the nearest village for help."
The scout glanced back toward the treeline. "Something's not right. These beasts shouldn't be working together. Someone has to be controlling them."
"Get ready!" the commander shouted, as the first beasts began to emerge from the forest, breaking through the trees, but they didn't rush towards the city instead they just continued walking forward.
...
"I thought you said we needed to lure them here. Why did you cut off their communication?" A voice came from a beast girl perched in a tree, looking down at her companion.
"There's no time to waste. The real target is Avalon, but it's too well-guarded. We can't get close without facing an entire army. So, instead, we're attacking here to draw their troops away," another voice replied. This one belonged to a demon girl with dark wings spread out behind her.
The beast girl frowned. "I get that, but if you cut off their communication, how is the army going to know and send help? Don't forget, I can teleport our entire army straight to Avalon. No one would be able to stand against us, and their defenses would collapse in no time," she added, a confident smirk crossing her face.
The demon girl shook her head. "We won't be able to teleport into Avalon. The city is surrounded by a powerful barrier that keeps all beasts out. Only a few of us can get in, and they've got an elite force called the Royal Knights guarding it."
"How do you know so much about Avalon? You've never even been there," the beast girl questioned, narrowing her eyes.
"I have a spy inside Avalon," the demon girl revealed with a sly grin.
The beast girl raised an eyebrow. "Okay, but if there's a barrier, how will we even enter after the army moves here?"
"Like I said, my spy is inside. She's going to destroy the barrier from the inside. Once it's down, you'll teleport our forces in. First, the army, then the beasts. When Avalon falls, the rest of the human cities will follow," the demon girl explained, her smile widening.
"As expected, your plan is perfect," the beast girl replied, satisfied. "Let's get this over with. I don't intend to die a second time."
Closing her eyes, the demon girl began muttering an incantation under her breath. After a moment, she opened her eyes. "I've restored their communication crystal. They'll call for help now. It's time to strike."
"I'll alert the others," the beast girl said as she leaped from tree to tree, heading toward a group of waiting soldiers and beasts, both human and beastkin alike.
...
"Commander, the crystal are back on, we can call for help" one of the troops spoke.
"Call the capital, tell them to give us everything, goddess save us" the commander spoke as all the beasts continued coming towards them, she couldn't count them as it was more than she had even seen in her life.
"They haven't started attacking, what are they waiting for?" The commander spoke.
"Commander I have the capital, it's General Lynn?"
The commander quickly collected the crystal, "General, we need help"
"Help, how powerful are the beasts you're facing that you need help, you know there are other cities that need help to, I'm sure you can handle your commander" The General spoke.
"We can't, the beasts, they are going to swarm the city, we can't hold them off"
"How many, I can spare a few soldiers"
"Uncountable, I can't count, they are different beasts all working together, wolf are in the midst of orcs and kobolds, it's not natural, I think they're being controlled?"
"Give me an estimate number"
"50,000 beasts" the commander replied.
"Fifty thousand beasts?" General Lynn's voice rose with disbelief. "That's impossible, I said give an estimate, I didn't tell you to call an impossible number?"
"I'm certain, General. They just keep coming. The forest is teeming with them," the commander replied, her eyes still fixed on the approaching army. It was a terrifying sight—the beasts weren't charging yet, but they advanced in perfect coordination, as if waiting for a signal to strike.
"How is that possible? Hold your ground. I'll report this to the Head of the Army immediately. Reinforcements will come, but I can't promise how soon." The general's voice was tense, no longer dismissive. "You'll need to buy us time, commander. Fortify your defenses as best you can and delay their assault.
Help is on the way."
The crystal went dark as the commander lowered it, her heart pounding. She turned to the soldiers, who had gathered at the walls, all eyes on her.
Some of the people here were seasoned warriors who had defended this city against smaller raids for years while some of them, this was going to be their first battle, but this… this was unlike anything they'd ever seen. All of them were afraid, with the army in front of them, anyone would be afraid.
"Listen up!" the commander barked, snapping her troops to attention.
"Reinforcements are coming, but until they arrive, we're on our own. Our task is simple, we hold this city at all costs. If they breach these walls, everyone inside is dead. Understood?"
A chorus of "Yes, ma'am!" followed, though the fear in their voices was clear. Read latest stories on empire
The commander glanced at the army in front of her, with the way they moved it was going to take at least an hour before they arrived at the city, but more beasts were still emerging from the trees.
"We are going to tire ourselves out" The commander cursed under her breath.
"Send the civilians underground. We need every soldier we can spare at the walls, everyone with long range spells on the walls, and everyone ready for close-quarters fighting if they breach the gates"
As the soldiers sprang into action, the commander caught sight of the beasts still gathering at the tree line.
In the distance, she could make out large figures—the orcs, standing taller than the rest, armed with massive clubs and axes. Among them were kobolds, goblins, and other beasts that wouldn't normally be seen together.
...
The beast girl returned, "We're ready to strike, do you know how long it'll take for the reinforcement to arrive"
"An hour or two at most, we'll strike Avalon at night, that way the beasts would have the advantage"
"That's right, humans don't have night vision, but the soldiers do, and what about your pet?"
"Of course I'm going with my pet, if we don't win this it's over, we're betting our lives on this" The demon girl replied.
"Do you think we'll finally be free after this"n/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om
"I have no idea, but for now let's focus"
