Chapter 63: Ques
63 63 - Ques
Noah was surprised that Lilith suddenly hissed angrily at the bird that was flying around. The noise she made was so low compared to the bird's scream that only Noah could hear her making it.
But even though her warning sound was much less threatening to him than the bird's cry, after she made that noise just once, the bird instantly stopped screaming and at some point disappeared.
The group was completely stunned by what was going on. They couldn't understand what had just transpired. This powerful bird came out of nowhere and when they were beginning to accept their fate that they had become prey instead of the hunter, strangely, the hunter who planned to use them as food gave up and disappeared.
"Was that some kind of warning?" Jasper asked worriedly.
"I don't know, but it was very strange. In one moment the bird was very angry and it looked like it was ready to kill us, but in the next moment it just disappeared as if it didn't care about us," a lightning magician said in a doubtful tone.
The Blessed began to discuss among themselves what could have happened, but in the meantime, Noah was ignoring everything they said and just focused on Lilith. The others did not notice, but as she was on his wrist, there was no way he would not notice that it was Lilith who had startled that bird with her simple hiss.
Noah knew from the beginning that she was not a normal creature, especially because of the window that floated in the corner of his vision asking if he wanted to make a contract with this demon. She was no ordinary monster, and he was sure of it, but he didn't think that even though she was so small, she would have such a powerful presence that it would scare off a monster that managed to frighten a group of 15 Blessed at the pinnacle of Rank E.
Unfortunately, Noah would not get the answers he wanted for now, as Lilith had apparently tried harder than she should have, and had grown tired again, being forced to wrap herself around Noah's wrist to recover.
Noah, watching the little snake wrapped around his wrist, couldn't help thinking that she was not as fragile as her small appearance made it seem.
'Her name being Lilith is definitely not just a coincidence. There is some reason behind it. Maybe she is a descendant; maybe she is Lilith herself. For now I can only speculate, but when she wakes up, we will have to find out about her past. Of course, that'll be after she recovers and no longer has to make so much effort just to remember something simple,' Noah thought to himself.
Noah agreed with the decision they made. He wanted to level up quickly, and leaving the Fortress to come back another day was definitely not in his plans for how to level up quickly. The fact that the enemy was stronger just meant to him that the enemy would yield more Exp.
As much as the battle was fierce and the other Blessed had a good chance of dying, Noah trusted his ability to teleport in order to escape with his life.
Suddenly, Noah heard a familiar notification noise from the system, but he thought it was strange because he hadn't leveled up or killed any monsters recently. Usually these were the only times that a notification window would float in front of him, except when he found Lilith. Excited, Noah looked quickly at the window and read the familiar wording written in flames.
[Ding, new mission available!]
'Mission?!' Noah was amazed as he saw what the notification was saying. 'What do you mean a mission? Have I ever received a mission before? Maybe I need to start doing demonic actions to get them, like... killing other humans?'
After thinking about it, Noah looked uncertainly at the other humans in his group and began to ponder if the mission was something about making a sacrifice for the devil with the souls of these humans, or even if he would agree to such a mission.
While he was pondering this, Noah thought about opening a mission window and the window opened immediately in front of him. It still was with a black background and with letters written in flames as usual, but the content of the message is what really got him excited.
[Quest Line: Journey of the Wings (1).
Background: God had never given wings to angels at their birth. Each angel always had to complete several tasks for God before he could receive his own pair of wings and finally be considered as a real angel. Like the other angels, Lucifer also had to go through several challenges to get his own wings.
Lucifer was so loyal to God that he had become a Cherub - the angels closest to God, who to prove their loyalty and competence, instead of a single simple pair of wings, the Cherubim had two pairs. But Lucifer was already turning into something else, being the first angel to develop the third pair of wings to become a Seraphim. Unfortunately, he was expelled from the sky before the third pair of wings could fully develop.
As the descendant of Lucifer, the user also has the right to have his own pair of wings, but since Lucifer had been expelled from heaven, he knew that God would not give a pair of wings to his Descendant, so Lucifer cut off his own wings that had turned black to keep for his future offspring, and he developed a pair of bat wings for himself.
The user has been doing a great job of collecting demonic energy constantly for more than 24 hours, so you have reached the basic requirements to receive the first quest from Quest Line: Journey of the Wings.
Mission: Totems from other deities have been scattered throughout the universe; one of these totems is being detected nearby. The user must destroy this totem and absorb the divinity contained within the totem. The absorbed divinity will be used to start reconstructing Lucifer's Wings.
Destroyed totems: 0/1
Do you want to accept the mission?]
Reading this vast amount of information and explanations provided by the system, Noah was momentarily lost in thought. He had many things to understand. First, the system actually had a method for giving missions to the user, just like RPG games. Noah initially believed that the only method of getting stronger with the system was to level up, but apparently he could also complete quests to become stronger, but for that he must first complete certain hidden requirements.
Thinking about the requirement he completed for this mission, the only explanation Noah could give for this was the little creature that was wrapped around his sleeping wrist while periodically squeezing Noah as if she was experiencing a nightmare and was afraid that Noah would go away.
The second thing that surprised Noah was that… he could get wings! This had always been an obvious aspiration of humanity's. Even if they developed technological means to fly such as spaceships, airplanes, helicopters - none of these quenched the desire of humans to fly alone.
People with Blessings that allowed them to fly were extremely rare. Probably in a group of 1 billion people there was only a single person who could fly among them. This was not to mention that the Blessing itself could very well just be Rank F and just allow the person to glide from point to point.
Thinking that he could have his own pair of wings that would allow him to fly made Noah feel much more excited about invading Fortresses. He wanted even more to kill monsters, collect lots of exp points, level up, and complete even more missions.
'These first missions will give me wings. What will the missions that I unlock in the future give me?' Noah imagined excitedly.
But ignoring the excitement for a moment, Noah remembered the main objective of the mission, which said he should destroy a totem from a nearby deity.
This reminded him of the large statue he saw in the Fortress of the goblin forest. After Noah left the goblins' Fortress, he searched the internet for mention of such statues but found nowhere anything about people commenting on it. Apparently no one had seen things like these statues, or whoever had seen them had decided not to post. Thinking about it also convinced Noah not to post anything, since if there was no one posting about it, he would rather not be the first to stand out talking about something that almost nobody knew about.
But he wondered, 'Why did I find that statue when no one else theoretically had before?'
And to Noah's surprise, that question he asked himself rhetorically was actually answered by the system.
[For the Descendant of Lucifer, illusions created by lower deities no longer affect the user. Totems are guarded by a great deal of powerful illusions made by lesser deities, but in front of Lucifer's power, these illusions are nothing. The user has the duty to destroy these totems since he was designated as the Descendant of Lucifer, so the moment the system integrated itself with the user, these illusions no longer had an effect on the user.]
This was even more shocking for Noah. Firstly, because apparently the same deities that gave Blessings to humanity were the ones who were placing totems inside the Fortresses, but also that these deities did not allow humans to worship at them, as they had put a lot of illusions in place to hide them.
'So... why was that statue, or rather, that totem inside a Fortress? And another thing... Why did that goblin manage to get past the illusions and run up to the statue?' Noah wondered internally.
