Kill the Sun

Nick arrived on top of the Aegis' headquarters, and the guards greeted him with utmost, over-the-top respect.

They did not want another extension of their sentence.

They essentially licked his boots.

Nick found that justified. Not because he felt that he was some amazing savior but because these corrupt guards finally had to act like the people they extorted in the past.

Nick walked down to the research and development department, nodded to a couple of researchers, and entered the Technician's area.

"Back already?" the Technician asked with a smile. "Thought you would take longer due to that entire business with Crimson City."

"I didn't have to do much," Nick said. "It seems like the leaders of Crimson City remembered Aria and me, and they basically did what I wanted."

"The problem is solved?" the Technician asked.

Nick just nodded.

"Great! Let's get to the interesting part, then. What did you find?" he asked with some excitement.

"A lot," Nick said. "Far, far more than I had thought."

"Come on, tell me," the Technician said. "Stop being all dramatic."

"Well," Nick said before taking a pause. "I will have to establish a couple of things first before we talk."

When the Technician heard that, his excitement dimmed a bit, and some nervousness crept into him.

Was Nick about to say more things that could get all of humanity killed?

"I know about the information thing," Nick said. "I will choose my words very carefully. Trust that I know what I am doing and that I will avoid saying things directly. I will use metaphors and hypotheticals to allude to some things. If you don't know these things already, you will not understand me, but if you do, you will realize what I mean."

The Technician was not happy anymore.

If Nick made even a single misstep, all of humanity could end within the day.

The Technician took a deep breath.

"Well, alright. I'll trust you on this," he said as he pressed the button that isolated his Barrier.

When it became clear again, Nick just nodded, indicating that nobody was watching.

"I know precisely why the old Champion said that it made sense that I compared him to the Nightmare. I confirmed things. I can't say more specifics on this topic," Nick said carefully.

The Technician couldn't be completely sure what Nick meant. The Champion hadn't had an opportunity to tell them about this thing after Nick appeared for the first time since he had already been too weak.

However, the Technician had his own theories.

He wasn't sure what Nick meant, but his theory that the Nightmare was once human gained a lot of credibility.

"I think I understand," the Technician said after releasing a breath. "Would you say this is a sad topic to talk about?"

Nick nodded. "It is filled with tragedy and irony."

That confirmed it.

The Nightmare used to be a human.

"Ending the tragedy is not difficult. I can end it myself," Nick said.

The Technician took a shocked breath.

"Please don't," he said.

He knew exactly what would happen if the Nightmare suddenly died.

"I won't," Nick said. "The end will happen at the very end."

So, not before they were about to attack the Sun.

"Good," the Technician said.

He lamented his earlier excitement.

This was not a fun conversation at all!

"I have another important thing to say. This one won't be as dangerous, but it will have the same impact as what I just said," Nick said.

Nick told the Technician about the hidden area in Crimson City's pillar and also told him about the captured Specter.

Having a suppressed Peak Adversary was not something that the true enemy would see as a threat. Especially when that Specter couldn't even be accessed or worked with.

Nick also told the Technician about Star Energy and Pure Energy.

If the aliens were keeping track of that, Nick would already be dead since the Specter had told him about those.Nôv(el)B\\jnn

This meant that access to these energies was not something that the aliens found to be too much of a threat.

Now, the conversation became exciting again for the Technician.

More energies than just Prephyx and Zephyx?

When Nick talked about Star Energy's relation to nuclear fusion, the Technician's mind was going wild.

First of all, it confirmed that nuclear fusion worked and that the Enlightened Ones had managed to use it to such a comfortable degree that they used Star Energy in many different parts.

That also finally solved the riddle of why they hadn't been able to interact with the Enlightened Ones' technology.

They were using the wrong energy the entire time!

Nick also told the Technician about the Seeds and how the Specter was willing to teach Nick.

"This is groundbreaking!" the Technician shouted. "You say we can finally make these implants work?!"

"Yes," Nick answered. "However, it will take a long time, and we might have to get past the Envious Researcher several times if we want to be sure."

"That's not a problem," the Technician said. "We've been dealing with this guy for so long that we've gotten pretty good at it. It's just very time-consuming and eats a lot of resources."

Nick nodded and looked at the Technician for several seconds.

The Technician could feel the atmosphere becoming tense again.

He did not like that.

"I saw a squid today," Nick said with a serious tone.

The Technician knew that Nick had just said something of utmost importance, judging by the tone, but no matter how much he thought, he couldn't find out what he meant.

Squid?

What squid?

Why was a squid so important?

When Nick saw the Technician's confusion, he knew that the Technician didn't know what the aliens looked like.

If he did, he would have made the connection immediately.

Most likely, not even the Champion of Light knew what the aliens actually looked like.

"Tentacles are like fingers, right?" Nick asked.

"And with fingers,you can build things."

"Machines, for example."

"Although, you could also just build a huge glass bottle for some experiment."

The Technician became more confused.

But then, he suddenly understood the metaphor, and his eyes widened.

"A squid?" the Technician asked with a serious tone.

"Yep," Nick said. "Quite intelligent creatures. Wait, that was octopuses. Well, the squid I saw today was still quite intelligent."

The Technician took a deep breath.

"And where did you find that squid?" he asked.

"I saw it a bit after looking at the Nightmare."

"By the way, did you know that Zephyx is amazing?" Nick suddenly asked. "Like, it's really amazing. Isn't it scary what people would do to get some Zephyx?"

"Zephyx is relatively stable and can be transported easily. Meanwhile, Prephyx is horrible and lacks energy. Wouldn't it be amazing if we could just ask some animals to suffer for us so that we could get the Zephyx? In this way, we could just pump Prephyx into their enclosure and harvest Zephyx without any issues. Although, we would need to be careful not to let them become too powerful."

"We could make a base on another property to make sure that they don't break out. The property isn't nearly as big as the enclosure, but it's still quite big."

"However, and that's the important part, we need some form of transportation system that allows us to harvest the Zephyx on a daily basis without them ever finding it. A very isolated space with one of our five strongest humans would be pretty good."

"Like that, the animals can't access the transportation system that leads directly into our base. We just need a big wall that keeps them out while having tiny holes that let Zephyx, Prephyx, or maybe mist, go through."

"Also, I think we should have some kind of self-destruct mechanism or huge weapon that can demolish everything inside the enclosure in case the enclosure gets destroyed and our guards aren't strong enough."

"On top of that,the enclosure should be built within a mostly-empty space that is filled with something extremely dangerous to them. You know, like Star Energy. Like that, even if a Specter from inside the enclosure escapes, they would just die to the Star Energy outside."

"Sure, the animals could probably find a way to create some form of Barrier, armor, or suit that could isolate the Specter from the damaging properties of Star Energy, but how could that even happen? I mean, animals and Specters working together? They're natural enemies."

"Lastly, how would they even develop such a technology without us noticing? That strong human is surveilling everything outside his small office, and they can't just enter that place. It's not like there's a Specter that could teleport them there, right?"

"Although, if they manage to get into there, they might be able to live in places that we can't surveil. But no worries. We have our forward base, and no Specter could possibly ever get there by, for example, jumping onto one of our transportation vehicles."

The Technician's mind was reeling.

He understood what Nick wanted to say.

It took him a long time to recover.
