Chapter 66: The Deal

When Ezekiel finally woke up he was in a tavern's room with War God beside him.

He couldn't remember much other than a burning pain in his chest and his mana feeling depleted.

He sat up to look War God in the eye while he checked his notifications.

"What happened to me? Why am I in the tavern?"

At the same time he opened his notifications.

~~~~~~~~~~
Mana Burn has been activated, mana capacity doubled for one minute.
Mana has reached a boiling point, spell power increased by 50%, taking damage equal to 1% mana capacity per second.
Enemy "Radiant Wolf lv250" has been consumed.
Vitality +500.
Congratulations! You have slain the field boss and completed the event, "Protect Raylock"
Due to your actions world events are changing.
"After the wolf shot you out of the sky you ended up killing it with those crazy spells. You ended up passing out and Hope got you out of the area."
"For some reason the guards have been crawling all over the city since that thing attacked too."
He thought back to what the system had told him in his notification and felt some concern.
He got ready to look at more of his system notifications when they heard someone bang on the door.
"City guard, we know the mage is in there and the captain wishes to speak to him."
When checking the door they saw a group of three guards, Ezekiel simply stood up to follow because he worried what would happen if he disobeyed the order.
When he left he saw War God following them.
The guards turned to confront her but the one leading simply dismissed it.
"Let the demon come, she is probably concerned for the safety of her mate."
'MATE?!'
"What do you mean mate! We aren't dating! Why would he even think about a giant muscle bound woman like this..."
"Oh normally a male devil accompanied by any female would be one of the mates guarding him, my apologies."
This incident had left the two so embarrassed that they were silent for the whole journey.
When they reached the barracks built onto the city wall they came face to face with the city guard captain for the first time.
'Whoa, she's cute.'
Genevieve Sola-
That was all the system gave him but if what the guards said was true then she was the captain of the city guard.
She was a very tall elven woman, green hair with hints of gold and deep green eyes.
Right now those eyes were boring into him like they wanted to examine deep into his soul.
"So you're the shadow mage the church is looking for..."
He choked for a moment before nodding.
"You know that wolf attack was partially your own fault right? The church came looking for you."
He winced at this as if the thought brought him physical pain.
"If you hadn't killed the thing it might have torn down the walls and left us vulnerable to future attacks by the church."
He looked down in shame.
"Look me in the eye shadow mage, give me one reason I shouldn't hand you over to the church now."
"I could be useful?..."
She examined him after this and nodded.
"You could be useful to us yes but what can you do that others cannot?"
He thought about it and then he decided that the best course of action was honesty.
"I recently got a class called the void mage, it was a special grade class?"
"My allies and I also got unique gear from the dungeon reward and we are working towards another achievement to get another piece each."
When he said this the demon who was watching immediately caught on and stepped forward.
"We defeated the dungeon boss on hard mode and got a first time clear achievement which gave us incredible rewards."
While she was talking he suddenly remembered something else.
"There's another demon too! She said that she wanted to take me away to protect me or something, she might help the city if I agree to go with her."
The captain raised a brow at this and looked him right in the eye.
"She uh.. found out that i had gotten unique gear from the dungeon and let me stay to try to complete the nightmare difficulty."
He began to describe the demon and with each word her eyes grew larger and larger.
"The Abyssal Knight. If what you say is true then you have caught the attention of two groups that you do not want to be involved with."
"The Infernal kingdom is powerful and ruled by the devil queen, they often recruit shadow magic users but no one ever hears from them again. The church of light exterminates shadow magic users so even if you don't choose the Infernal kingdom you will die outside of it."
Upon hearing this he sighed in defeat and nodded.
"Then maybe I can try to meet her again and tell her the plan? She might agree if I do that."
The captain visibly shivered at the thought.
"Having the Abyssal Knight on our side would certainly make any attacks from the church of light into an irrelevant pest but it would also mean we gain the full attention of the church."
After sitting down and thinking about it she eventually looked out of a window.
"We must discuss it with the city lord, only then will we actually be able to make a decision."
~
In the woods a pair of demons were meeting back with one another.
"You found the shadow user yes?"
The larger demoness nodded.
"Yes I did and i have interesting news that the queen must know immediately."
Her partner sat there waiting.
"It was a devil, a male devil with the child of the abyss bloodline."
The sitting demon jumped to her feet with a gasp.
"The queen will kill us if we don't succeed in bringing him back! She might even come herself to retrieve him..."
"Yes, she would risk sparking another war with that ridiculous church just to get a make devil with that bloodline."
While her partner was rambling the larger demoness snapped her fingers to catch the other's attention.
"There is more, he has a piece of unique gear. The otherworlders have the chance to obtain unique gear again because they have their own requirements from the system."
After hearing this the other demoness said nothing, and then sprinted in the direction of the city.
~
Inside of the city the two players were being brough to the center where the large council chambers were.
Apparently the city lord also lived in this building rather than his own home.
When they got into the building they were given a path to the city lord without any restraints, the captain was throwing her weight around it seemed.
They entered an office where a man was sitting around doing paperwork but he looked up when he heard the door.
"Ah Genevieve, is something wrong?"
She clasped her fist to her chest and bowed her head before motioned towards War God and Belial.
"These two are otherworlders and the devil is the shadow mage that the church has been seeking. They gave me information that would interest you."
He scowled at them before dismissively waving his hand. "Speak."
Ezekiel stepped forward and cleared his throat.
"I wasn't aware that my existence was causing so many problems im so sorry, there is a demon in the city that was looking for me and your captain recognized the description of her."
He proceeded to describe how they met and how he had gotten two unique items which had caught the attention of the demon.
"She wants me to complete the nightmare difficulty of the dungeon and then leave with her but if she finds out that the church is trying to attack you then I might be able to convince her to protect your city."
The city lord looked like he was displeased until the captain spoke up.
"He described the Abyssal Knight."
After these words the lord gasped and immediately went into deep thought.
He seemed ready to speak until they heard crashing and yelling outside of the room.
The captain began to draw her sword until the door burst open.
In the door was a demon that stood at least seven feet tall with blue, ram-like horns. She had deep crimson skin and blue veins that pulsed with magical power.
"You! You are the devil that uses shadow magic yes? My partner met you and told me what to look for."
She was walking right up to Ezekiel, completely ignoring the captain and the lord.
When he looked around he saw the two of them standing with their mouths hanging open before they quickly kneeled.
"G-great Ashbringer, we were not aware that you were in our humble city! Please accept our apologies for not properly greeting you!"
They were shaking... Ezekiel was worried now.
"We disguised ourselves because of those disgusting church bastards that were here, why is our new devil in your view city lord? Don't tell me you were planning to hand him over to save yourselves."
Ezekiel quickly spoke up.
"No not at all! We were here to see if he would approve of me asking your partner to protect the city from the church while I completed the nightmare difficulty!"
She examined the young devil before scoffing.
"This is not one of our territories... if you agree to come back quietly then we will make it one but you must swear loyalty to the queen."
'Swear loyalty?'
