Chapter 39
Ji Fei inwardly mocked Qin Zhao's hot temper, thinking that if he was this angry just knowing the Chu couple was looking for Chu Xinyue, he'd probably explode if he knew their outrageous intentions.
Following along to watch the drama unfold, they quickly arrived at Chu Xueqi's hospital room.
As expected, she wasn't even in the intensive care unit, yet they had lied to Chu Xinyue on the phone, making it sound as if Chu Xueqi was on the brink of death. They didn't seem to worry about jinxing their precious daughter.
At this moment, Mr. and Mrs. Chu were anxiously fuming because they couldn't reach Chu Xinyue, constantly cursing under their breath.
"That ungrateful daughter is so heartless! Her sister is in this state because of her, and she won't even come to visit!"
"What should we do? Has Xinyue completely abandoned us? If she's this cold-hearted, even if we find her, she probably won't agree to the transplant for Xueqi."
"This happened because of her, so refusing would be unconscionable. If that's the case, I'll go to her school and see how they can accept someone with such low moral character!"
[Truly witnessing the diversity of species here. To not only have such thoughts but to voice them so righteously, it's clear they don't see anything wrong with their behavior! If Qin Zhao hears this, the consequences might be even worse than if Chu Xinyue did.]
Sure enough, Qin Zhao was furious. He charged over without warning, using his uninjured hand to grab Mr. Chu's collar and slam him against the wall.
"Ah!" Mr. Chu let out a painful cry.
Gao Hao, startled, quickly looked around to see if anyone had noticed. It was the first time he had seen Qin Zhao so enraged, so he gave up on trying to stop him and opted to keep watch instead.
After the initial shock of pain, Mr. Chu recognized who it was and was completely stunned, probably never imagining that one day he'd be treated this way by someone younger.
"Qin Zhao, it's you. What are you doing?!"
"Qin Zhao, let go of your uncle, how can you—" Mrs. Chu, snapping out of her daze, became frantic. She tried to pull Qin Zhao away but found she couldn't budge him; he was like an enraged bull.
Mrs. Chu could only turn to others for help, noticing that Qin Zhao's older brother and sister-in-law were standing not far away.
"Qin Xian, Ji Fei, quickly..."
Ji Fei blinked and calmly turned to sit on a nearby bench. She was a bit tired from rushing over, so she might as well sit down and enjoy the show.
Mrs. Chu was shocked and fixed her pleading gaze on Qin Xian. Surely the Qin family heir wouldn't be so...
Qin Xian glanced at Ji Fei sitting beside him, then sat down as well. He addressed Qin Zhao, "Be careful not to aggravate your injury. Mom and Dad will worry when we get back."
As he finished speaking, he noticed Ji Fei had already started secretly recording a video.
Qin Xian: ...Perhaps their parents' concern would be outweighed by their eagerness to see the drama unfold.
Mrs. Chu opened and closed her mouth, unable to utter a word. She could only clutch her head, nearly fainting from the shock.
Mr. Chu was furious, but being pinned against the wall by the much taller Qin Zhao, his feet barely touching the ground, he couldn't struggle free. His face turned red with anger, veins bulging in his neck.
"We are your elders! Have you gone mad?!"
"I think you're the ones who've gone mad. You don't deserve to be parents. It's fortunate that Xinyue cut ties with your family, or you'd have tormented her to death by now!"
The Chu couple stared at Qin Zhao in disbelief. It hadn't been that long since they'd last seen him, yet he was now acting this way for Chu Xinyue.
"You... what nonsense are you spouting! Weren't you injured too? How can you say none of this is because of Chu Xinyue? As an older sister, not only did she fail to protect her younger sister, but she also got her into trouble. If it weren't for her, would Xueqi's face and kidneys be damaged? Even if she's unwilling to help, she should at least make up for her mistakes!"
"Is it because she guessed something and is deliberately avoiding us, refusing to save her sister?! How can she be so heartless!"
Faced with such parents, Qin Zhao seemed to finally understand the suffocating feeling Chu Xinyue had endured for over twenty years.
Qin Zhao's hands trembled with rage, his eyes bulging, looking as if he might start throwing punches at any moment.
Ji Fei couldn't help but mock them, "From what you're saying, it sounds like you want a piece of skin and a kidney. I'm curious, why can't Chu Xueqi use her own skin for her disfigurement? As for the kidney problem, can't you wait for a donor? It's not like she's going to die immediately, so why does it have to come from Chu Xinyue? Do you hate her so much that you can't stand to see her well?"
"What nonsense are you talking about! We're her parents, how could we not want her to be well? Xueqi has a weak constitution and can't withstand repeated procedures. Twins are the most stable and suitable for transplants."
"This is unavoidable. Family members should help each other."
Qin Zhao's blood boiled as he snarled, "Help each other? Then tell me, what has Chu Xueqi ever done to help Chu Xinyue since she was born?"
The Chu couple suddenly looked as if they were being choked, probably wracking their brains but unable to come up with a single instance.
Qin Zhao sneered, "It's always been Chu Xinyue one-sidedly helping Chu Xueqi, hasn't it? Last time, Chu Xueqi's true, vile nature was exposed, yet you still treat her like a treasure, mistreating Xinyue so badly for her sake!"
Qin Zhao found it unbelievable. He and the Chu couple had been equally deceived by Chu Xueqi's façade, and now when he thought back on it, he felt disgusted. He couldn't believe the Chu couple showed no remorse whatsoever.
"If they don't continue to dote on Chu Xueqi, wouldn't that mean all those years of their lives were wasted?" Qin Xian rarely spoke so caustically, but his words struck right at the heart of the matter.
Ji Fei nodded in agreement.
[Getting older people to admit they're wrong is harder than prying open their coffin lids.]
A flicker of wavering and guilt flashed across Mr. Chu's face, but he quickly stiffened his neck and said, "After all, this is a matter for our family..."
[Here we go again, the same old trick. When they can't win with reason, they appeal to emotions and attitudes.]
Amused by Ji Fei's comment, Qin Xian suddenly spoke up. "Family? So... have you been tested for compatibility?"
This time, everyone was stunned. It was as if lightning had struck their brains.
"Besides her twin sister, wouldn't you two as parents be the most likely to be compatible?" Qin Xian said calmly.
The Chu couple's minds seemed to short-circuit, unable to process this for a moment.
Ji Fei was instantly disgusted.
"Oh my, darling, how can you suspect Uncle and Auntie like that? Even if their hearts are skewed to outer space, these are still their daughters. When their daughter is in trouble, as parents, their first thought would surely be to help themselves, not burden their children. It's impossible that they'd expect one daughter to fill in for the other."
Qin Xian was startled by the sudden "darling" but reflexively played along, "Is that so?"
"Of course! They must have failed the compatibility test and had no choice but to turn to Chu Xinyue for help. It couldn't possibly be that they could potentially help but instead want a young woman in the prime of her life, who hasn't even fallen in love, gotten married, or had children yet, to be left with two huge scars, losing her freedom to dress as she likes and her health and vitality, forced to live cautiously from then on."
"Hmm, you make a good point."
"Exactly! They're living parents, not King Yama incarnate. Even tigers don't eat their own cubs!"
